Ausberto is a founding member of Resonance Arts\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to presenting unconventional performance in unlikely spaces throughout the greater Chicago area. \n\n\n\nJason Adsasiewicz Vibraphonist\, drummer\, and composer has been an integral member of Chicago’s jazz and improvised music scene\, bringing his aggressive yet lyrical style to both Chicago and international groups. Adasiewicz performs frequently in Europe. Adasiewicz won the 2011 Downbeat Annual Critic’s Poll in the Rising Star Vibes category and has continuously placed in the vibes category. \n\n\n\nTim Daisy is a Chicago based drummer\, composer\, and presenter who’s been an active member of the international improvised music scene since the late 1990s. \n\n\n\nMainly self- taught\, with some private lessons on drums\, marimba and vibraphone\, Tim’s move and subsequent immersion into Chicago’s fertile creative music scene in 1997 has given him the opportunity to perform\, compose\, tour and record with some of the city’s most acclaimed musicians and ensembles. \n\n\n\nAlong with his drumming and compositional work connected to various experimental music groups\, Tim has also contributed original compositions and improvisations for modern dance\, various sound installations\, documentary films\, and podcasts. \n\n\n\nSince 2011\, he has operated Relay Records\, a 100% artist-run cd and download label which documents much of his creative work both locally and internationally. \n\n\n\nTim helped co-curate the Option Series at Experimental Sound Studio from 2015 until 2022. The programming explores contemporary perspectives on improvisation and composition in a ‘salon’ format\, enabling local\, national\, and international artists to publicly discuss their practice and ideas as well as perform. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, he is a member of the Catalytic Sound Creative Music Cooperative. A music-based co-operative designed to help create economic sustainability for its artists through patron support. \n\n\n\nOutside of Tim’s performance\, curatorial and label duties\, he has worked as a teaching artist with CAPE (Chicago Artist Partnerships in Education.) Collaborating with Chicago public school teachers on projects which enhance learning through arts integration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKeefe Jackson Saxophonist/clarinetist/improvisor/composer\, Keefe Jackson arrived in Chicago in 2001 from his native Fayettevile\, Arkansas. He has also appeared with Michael Moore\, Ab Baars\, Michiel Braam\, Satoko Fujii\, and Anthony Coleman. Bill Meyer (Chicago Reader): “…the impeccable logic of his lines and the richness of his tone leave you wanting more… Jackson’s high-register squiggles and coarsely voiced\, rippling runs push the limits of the tenor’s tonal envelope.” Frank van Herk\, de Volkskrant (Amsterdam): “[Jackson] has an old-fashioned\, warm-woolly sound\, and a feeling for melodic lines that take their time in unfolding.” He has been mentioned in the DownBeat Critics Poll in the Rising Star Tenor Saxophone category. Recordings are available on Delmark and Clean Feed Records. \n\n\n\nMolly Jones Molly Jones’ practice incorporates improvisation and composition with saxophones\, flutes\, and electronics.  Her work originates in a place of playfulness\, listening\, and attention. \n\n\n\nInfluenced by her experiences in jazz\, new music\, Balkan brass\, and Scottish country dance ensembles; her fascination with found sounds; her work as a software engineer; and her ongoing participation in mindfulness communities\, she has created electroacoustic pieces\, chamber works\, experimental theater performances\, poetry\, and video in addition to maintaining an improvisation practice.  She performs with Chicago quartet Mad Myth Science. \n\n\n\nMai Sugimoto is a saxophonist\, composer\, and active member of Chicago’s jazz and improvisational music scene. “A compelling performer” with “dry-champagne tone and lyrical lines” (Chicago Tribune)\, Sugimoto draws inspiration from her upbringing in Japan and her roots in jazz to compose and perform from her unique multicultural experience. Born/Raised\, her debut album (Asian Improv Records\, 2018)\, explores this cultural and musical binary\, juxtaposing\, among others\, a jazz rendition of a Japanese children’s song alongside compositions inspired by the American jazz idiom. Sugimoto is also a core member of the quartet Hanami\, whose two albums similarly mix Japanese culture into creative music. Mai has performed three times at the Chicago Jazz Festival: in 2015 with Hanami\, in 2019 as a leader\, and in 2018 with renowned bassist Tatsu Aoki\, with whom she frequently plays\, including appearances in his Fred Anderson Legacy Band. SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Ra Bishop + Mai Sugimoto/Erik Sowa Duo
DESCRIPTION:$15 at the door\nno one gets turned away \nRa Bishop\nJeb Bishop \nA truly multi-generational group\, the ensemble Ra Bishop embodies an extraordinary breadth of combined experience. Master percussionist Avreeayl Ra (Professor Longhair\, Sun Ra Arkestra) and the singular trombonist Jeb Bishop (Jeb Bishop Trio/Quartet\, Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet) first worked together in bands led by guitarist Dan Phillips. Since Bishop’s move back to Chicago in 2022\, the two have sought ways to deepen their collaboration in new settings. For this trio and quartet performance at Chicago’s Hungry Brain in March 2024\, they were joined by veteran composer/bandleader/improviser Edward Wilkerson Jr (8 Bold Souls\, Shadow Vignettes) on woodwinds\, and on piano the remarkable and intrepid newcomer Erez Dessel\, a more recent arrival in Chicago who has quickly made himself heard there. The first set recorded that night in March was the trio of Wilkerson\, Ra\, and Bishop\, while Dessel\, coming from a recording session that day\, joined them for the second set. Both sets find the musicians immediately and fearlessly exploring a wide range of territory\, the bassless lineup promoting agility and a move to unconventional textures. The distinctive and fascinating results are heard on the group’s debut CD Of the Essence\, which contains the quartet set from that evening\, while the trio set is available as a download\, also from Amalgam. \n  \nMai Sugimoto/Erik Sowa Duo\nMai Sugimoto \nMai Sugimoto is a Japanese-born saxophonist\, composer\, and improviser based in Chicago. Her most recent release\, Sunlight Filtering Through Leaves (Asian Improv Records\, 2024)\, was reviewed by Peter Margasak\, who noted: “[the album] conveys that singular joy of good improvised music\, when it’s not about ripping solos but group unity. Naturally\,Im advising you all to pay close attention to Sugimoto from here on out.” \nErik Sowa \nErik Sowa is a Chicago based drummer/multi-instrumentalist whose musical directions are informed by post-rock\, free jazz\, ambient/noise\, and afro-beat traditions. In recent years\, Erik has collaborated with a wide range of performers of varied musical genres including Peter Maunu\, Jeb Bishop\, Norman Long\, Ben Schmidt-Swartz\, Mai Sugimoto\, Thomas Comerford\, and Snek Trio. In 2022\, Erik released a self-titled solo album of instrumental compositions titled “Cedar Lake Recordings Vol. 1” which was reviewed in Dusted Magazine.

SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Dessel + Hatcher/ Syzygia
DESCRIPTION:$15 at the door\nNo one turned away \nErez Dessel and Gerrit Hatcher present a new project rooted in the tradition but looking ahead\, never bound by aesthetics and deeply grounded by an improvisatory practice that spans space and time. SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Adam Shead's Adiaphora Orchestra - 2 Sets
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7pm\nMusic at 8pm \n$15  \nAdam Shead is a multi-disciplinary artist living in Chicago\, IL whose practice spans the realms of improvised music\, music composition\, painting\, photography\, and poetry. Throughout Shead’s practice he attempts to create work that develops a sense of spacial presence in which the codification of human experience is dismantled and the prevailing homogenization of culture takes a back seat to personal truth\, encouraging the invention of new and personal ways of expressing and knowing oneself. Through this exploration of truth Shead hopes to develop work that allows a moment of reprieve while simultaneously challenging himself and his audience through active participation in invention\, acceptance\, compassion\, trust\, and grace.

SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Stein/Dammann/Hunt Trio & Sugimoto/Daisy Duo
DESCRIPTION:Resonance Arts is pleased to present November’s installment of Cross Modulations. This month we feature a trio consisting of Jason Stein on bass clarinet\, Chris Dammann on bass\, and Steve Hunt on Drums. In addition the pairing of Tim Daisy and Mai Sugimoto also perform. \nJason Stein \nJason Stein is among the mere handful of improvisers who play the bass clarinet exclusively. Stein leads the acclaimed trio Locksmith Isidore as well as his own quartet. He contributes to several of the leading bands on Chicago’s new-music scene and has brought a vital voice to the freest of free-jazz jams. Stein’s playing showcases an extraordinary expertise on the bass clarinet\, which ranges from powerful post-bop lines to ear-grabbing wails in the altissimo range. Chicago writer Neil Tesser notes that “Stein’s playing has a rawboned swagger particular to Chicago jazz in all its manifestations – from the trad playing of Bud Freeman and Jimmy McPartland in the 20s\, through the tenor titans of the 50s\, through the adventurers who formed the AACM in the 60s\, and right up to the city’s renowned modern cadre of new-music improvisers.” Stein moved to Chicago in 2005 and has since recorded for such labels as Leo\, Delmark\, Not Two\, Atavistic\, 482 Music\, Clean Feed\, Astral Spirits\, and Northern Spy.  Stein has performed throughout the US and Europe as both a bandleader and sideman and has amassed a discography of over 40 albums. \nChris Dammann \nChris is a composer/bassist who lives in Chicago. He is lucky enough to have improvised with many of his favorite musicians\, worked in a variety of bands\, performed music for national television shows and ad campaigns. Additionally\, he was a key figure in Extraordinary Popular Delusions\, further showcasing his versatility and passion for pushing musical boundaries. With a career rooted in collaboration and creativity\, Steve Hunt continues to be a significant force in the Chicago music landscape. \nMai Sugimoto \nMai Sugimoto is a saxophonist\, composer\, and active member of Chicago’s jazz and improvisational music scene. Her first solo album\, monologue (Asian Improv Records) was released in March of 2021. \nTim Daisy \nTim Daisy is a Chicago based drummer\, composer\, and presenter who’s been an active member of the international improvised music scene since the late 1990s. \nMainly self- taught\, with some private lessons on drums\, marimba and vibraphone\, Tim’s move and subsequent immersion into Chicago’s fertile creative music scene in 1997 has given him the opportunity to perform\, compose\, tour and record with some of the city’s most acclaimed musicians and ensembles. \nAlong with his drumming and compositional work connected to various experimental music groups\, Tim has also contributed original compositions and improvisations for modern dance\, various sound installations\, documentary films\, and podcasts. \nSince 2011\, he has operated Relay Records\, a 100% artist-run cd and download label which documents much of his creative work both locally and internationally. \nTim helped co-curate the Option Series at Experimental Sound Studio from 2015 until 2022. The programming explores contemporary perspectives on improvisation and composition in a ‘salon’ format\, enabling local\, national\, and international artists to publicly discuss their practice and ideas as well as perform. \nIn addition\, he is a member of the Catalytic Sound Creative Music Cooperative. A music-based co-operative designed to help create economic sustainability for its artists through patron support. \nOutside of Tim’s performance\, curatorial and label duties\, he has worked as a teaching artist with CAPE (Chicago Artist Partnerships in Education.) SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Macie Stewart & Acevedo/Clark/Fawcett Trio
DESCRIPTION:Our next Cross Modulations presentation will feature the ultra talented multi-instrumentalist\, Macie Stewart playing a solo set. She will be joined on this bill by a new trio featuring Chad Clark on guitar\, Ausberto Acevedo on string bass\, and Jacob Little Cloud Fawcett on drums and percussion. Not to be missed. See below for bios. \nMacie Stewart is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer/arranger\, songwriter\, and improviser based in Chicago\, IL\nStewart primarily works with piano\, violin\, voice\, guitar\, and synthesizers. From a very young age Macie was drawn towards music and sound; learning to communicate with music while simultaneously learning to communicate with words. Stewart’s experience as an open collaborator and composer in her own right has led her music to become fluid and expansive- drawing on all that has come before while intentionally searching for something new. “Mouth Full of Glass” was her debut solo project: released fall of 2021 in the US and as an international release in fall of 2022. \nAusberto Acevedo is a bassist\, composer\, improviser\, and teacher based in Evanston\, IL. \nChad M. Clark is a Chicago based artist and musician known for his idiosyncratic approach to steel string and electric guitar. His aesthetic is one of improvisation as a life force rather than an element or feature. \nJacob Little Cloud Fawcett (Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Ojibwe) is a Chicago based improvisational drummer/composer who blends aspects of jazz and traditional Native American music in order to create original compositions that accurately reflect Indigenous culture and experience. Former teachers include the great Frank Rosaly and legendary poly-rhythm guru Peter Magadini.

SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Rempis/Hall Duo + Where Were We
DESCRIPTION:While the saxophone/drum duo has a deep history in the realms of jazz and improvised music\, this pairing of Chicagoan Dave Rempis and Detroiter Ben Hall puts a new spin on the possibilities.  After Hall’s jaw-dropping set with Damon Locks at the 2022 Catalytic Sound Festival\, utilizing a low-end concert bass drum and tympani setup that could best be described as an homage to the blown-out trunk rattle bass ubiquitous in urban areas across the US\, he and Rempis spoke at length about the possibilities inherent to that sound. And the two decided to come together to explore those frequencies further with a concert and recording session in Detroit in summer 2023. With Rempis also focusing on the low-end of his arsenal\, the two vibrate rooms in some truly heavy ways. July’s concert at Color Club will be their first Chicago performance. \n \n\nWhere Were We is a fully improvised group comprised of Erez Dessel (keyboard)\, Tyler Damon (percussion)\, Beth McDonald (tuba/electronics).

SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Keefe Jackson/Anton Hatwich and Jason Roebke/Michael Zerang/Jon Irabagon
DESCRIPTION:Keefe Jackson \nSaxophonist/clarinetist/improvisor/composer\, Keefe Jackson arrived in Chicago in 2001 from his native Fayettevile\, Arkansas. He performs regularly in the U.S. and in Europe with many musicians including Pandelis Karayorgis\, Tomeka Reid\, Tim Daisy\, Dave Rempis\, Jeb Bishop\, Jason Roebke\, Jason Adasiewicz\, Mike Reed\, Jason Stein\, Josh Berman\, Fred Lonberg-Holm\, Frank Rosaly\, Oscar Jan Hoogland and Marc Unternaehrer. \n  \nAnton Hatwich \nBassist\, composer\, and improviser Anton Hatwich has lived in Chicago since 2003. He was born and raised in Rockford\, IL\, growing up in a musical family. Anton moved to Iowa City\, IA in 1995 and lived there until 2002\, earning a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Iowa. After graduation Hatwich taught for two years as Visiting Artist in Music at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon\, IA. At the UI he studied bass with Dr. Diana Gannett\, jazz and improvisation with John Rapson\, and also gained valuable experience playing with the school’s renown Center for New Music\, under the direction of David Gompper. Outside of class\, Anton was active in the local music scene. Of particular lasting importance was his work with clarinettist\, saxophonist\, and composer Robert Paredes\, with whom Anton took first steps in the world of free improvisation. \n  \nJason Roebke \nJason Roebke is a double bassist\, improviser and composer living in Chicago. He was born and raised in tiny Kaukauna\, Wisconsin in 1974 and began playing electric bass at age 14. His first fascination was with Motown bassist James Jamerson. Roebke’s first introduction to jazz was at a summer jazz camp run by local legend\, pianist\, John Harmon. Here he heard recordings of Charlie Parker and a life long fascination with music was begun. His high school band director had a small jazz CD collection which included Ornette Coleman’s “The Art of the Improvisers” and Charles Mingus “Mingus Ah Um” which he listed to endlessly for years. \n  \nMichael Zerang \nMichael Zerang was born in Chicago\, Illinois\, and is a first-generation American of Assyrian decent. Equally adept at composing for rising stars in new music and the most intricate modern jazz ensemble\, Irabagon builds on this foundation by adding modern classical and late-period John Coltrane to his compositional base\, focusing primarily on mixed chamber ensembles to take advantage of hand-chosen musicians’ voices and attitudes.

SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Gleaming Shard | Shead – Smith – Stein Trio
DESCRIPTION:Gleaming Shard is the duo of Da Wei Wang and Jerome Bryerton long time collaborators in the group Street Tentacle with Jeff Chan. \nDa Wei Wang is a veteran guitar hawk of the Chicago avant-rock scene. He is best known for his work in the legendary industrial-gospel-punk band\, Ono. He is also an improviser in Street Tentacle. He has toured throughout the United States and internationally to disseminate the hymns of experimental guitar music. \nDa Wei’s fractured\, atonal guitar style spans from dada funk to existential doom to ambient raga. He applies extended techniques and tools on his guitar to conjure dense\, textured landscapes. His solo guitar work is like a storm cloud whose gaseous firmament is carpeted with hoary sprouts and dust geysers. \nJerome Bryerton’s artistic expression evolved from years of playing drums in rock\, jazz and experimental groups. Performing solo or collaboratively\, he’s toured and recorded internationally with many notable improvisers. Jerome is also part owner of a large industrial silk screening operation in Chicago. \nWhile some may perceive a factory to be the antithesis to the creative process\, Jerome’s imagination has been known to incorporate the errors of assembly line production into some of his art. Rejected test prints often made their way into many of his early canvases. \nStrictly working within the medium of oil on canvas and applied with plexiglass. Jerome’s dense\, moody abstractions and marbleized colors have been said to evoke controlled chaos\, blurred memory and decay. His influences range from Masters such as Gerhard Richter\, Anselm Kiefer\, Luc Tuymans and Cy Twombly. Self-taught and skilled in improvisation\, Jerome believes that everything starts with curiosity: if you’re curious about something and you’re willing to learn more about it\, everything happens by itself. \nShead – Smith – Stein Trio is a trio consisting of Adam Shead on percussion\, Damon Smith on Bass\, and Jason Stein on Bass Clarinet. \nAdam Shead is an American multi-disciplinary artist of Armenian descent living in Chicago\, Il whose practice spans the realms of music\, painting\, photography\, and poetry. Throughout his work Shead hopes to create a sense of spatial presence in which the codification of experience is dismantled in the search of personal truth. Through this pursuit of truth Adam hopes to provide a reprieve while simultaneously challenging himself and his audience through active participation in invention\, compassion\, trust\, and grace. \nShead can be heard performing regularly throughout Chicago at such venues as Constellation\, Hungry Brain\, Elastic Arts\, and Experimental Sound Studio; performing alongside such muscians as Jason Stein\, Damon Smith\, Josh Berman\, Steve Swell\, John Dikeman\, Jasper Stadhouers\, Angel Bat Dawid\, Matt Piet\, James Falzone\, and Mary Oliver. Adam has recorded music for Amalgam Records\, Ears & Eyes Records\, Scripts Records\, and Impermanent Records. In 2016 he was selected as Artist in Residence for the Birdsell Project’s summer season. Adam has performed at renowned festivals such as Edge Fest\, DOEK festival\, and Homebody Festival. Shead holds a Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance from Columbia College Chicago as well as Masters of Music in Contemporary Improvisation and a Graduate Certificate in World Performance Studies from the University of Michigan. \nDamon Smith studied double bass with Lisle Ellis and has had lessons with Bertram Turezky\, Joëlle Leandré\, John Lindberg\, Mark Dresser and others. Damon’s explorations into the sonic palette of the double bass have resulted in a personal\, flexible improvisational language based in the American jazz avant-garde movement and European non-idiomatic free improvisation. Visual art\, film and dance heavily influence his music\, as evidenced by his CAMH performance of Ben Patterson’s Variations for Double Bass\, collaborations with director Werner Herzog on soundtracks for Grizzly Man and Encounters at the End of the World\, and an early performance with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. \nDamon has collaborated with a wide range of musicians\, including: Cecil Taylor\, Marshall Allen (of Sun Ra’s Arkestra)\, Henry Kaiser\, Keith Rowe\, Jaap Blonk\,Roscoe Mitchell\, Weasel Walter\, Michael Pisaro\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Weasel Walter\, Marco Eneidi\, Wolfgang Fuchs\, Peter Brötzmann and Peter Kowald. After many years in the San Francisco Bay Area\, and six great years in Houston\, Texas working regularly with Alvin Fielder\, Sandy Ewen\, Thomas Helton\, David Dove & Chris Cogburn. Damon moved to the Boston area in the fall of 2016 and began working with Jeb Bishop\, Pandelis Karayorgis\, Joe McPhee and Ra-Kalam Bob Moses and many others. Damon has run Balance Point Acoustics record label since 2001\, releasing music focusing on transatlantic collaborations between US and European musicians. \nJason Stein is among the mere handful of improvisers who play the bass clarinet exclusively.

SUMMARY:Cross Modulations Series: Ed Wilkerson | Ben Lamar Gay Duo and Ratchet
DESCRIPTION:Edward Wilkerson Jr. is one of the great saxophone and clarinet players on the Chicago scene\, but from the ’80s into the new millennium may have become best known as a bandleader and composer\, particularly associated with medium- to large-scale projects (somewhat daunting in an era when creative music bandleaders are challenged to keep even small ensembles together). He has also been a major presence in Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM)\, teaching composition at the organization’s music school and serving for a time as AACM president. \nBen LaMar Gay is a composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, singer\, poet\, and patently eclectic polymath who Afropunk has called “strikingly original\,” Pitchfork has called “uncategorizable\,” and Jeff Parker has called “hands down\, one of my favorite musicians on the planet today.” He channels a radical array of sound\, color\, and space through the universal language of folklore; but despite the widely attributed genius of his work\, his artistic approach and general demeanor are characterized by an endearing humbleness and warm humanity. \nRatchet is a Chicago based quartet featuring Ausberto Acevedo double bass\, Jeff Chan woodwinds\, Chad Clark guitars\, and Mike Perkins synths and electronics
