Mission Statement
To increase awareness, understanding and opportunity for an inclusive vision of creative music and arts in greater Chicago.
What We Do
Resonance Arts is a nonprofit organization that seeks to provide support for artists that walk outside the mainstream, those whose work is considered experimental, unconventional, and representative of marginalized communities reflecting race, ethnicity, sexual identity, and gender identity, through connecting audiences and performers beyond the city of Chicago. We present performances, workshops, and clinics that call into question normative views of art. Audiences and performers are connected and asked to explore the question, “what is art?”
Resonance Arts Believe
- that we must be as experimental, responsive, and risk-taking as the artists with whom we collaborate.
- in the power of artists and art to shape lives and communities.
- in creating experiences that engage and raise questions for our audiences, and, in turn, learning from our audiences.
- that our work embraces complexity and encourages an inclusive representation of the creative landscape of the greater metropolitan area.
- that “this group” thrives because of relationships—among artists and audiences —forged from dialogue, premised on respect, creation of cross-cultural exchanges and committed to a shared purpose.
- in amplifying new, emerging and marginalized creative voices.
- that this group supports the decolonization of creative music and arts to ensure a more diverse cultural landscape.
- in providing documentation and proliferation of the artist’s work to an audience beyond the greater Chicago metro area. Moreover, that the work belongs to the artist and it should be made available to the artist so that they have documentation to use in any manner that they feel appropriate.
Diversity, Inclusion, and Amplifying Marginalized Voices
Diversity, inclusion, and amplification of marginalized voices sits at the core of our existence. Resonance Arts is steadfast in creating an environment where the expectation is that people of all ethnicities, races, religions, sexual orientations or gender identifications are welcomed and included. Those who have been marginalized or otherwise oppressed should feel especially welcomed.
